Fiction and SciFi

Fiction comes from the latin word fictum meaning 'created' so from this we know that fiction is of total opposite of reality as it is created and not true at all. There are three main elements of Fiction which is the Plot, Characters and place/time

Plot which is the storyline
Characters such as the protagonist, antagonist and supporting characters
Place/time is the era where the story take place

Science Fiction means to have a science base like alien worlds, time travel, spacecrafts and robots etc. Films that are Science Fiction are usually base on political issues or social issues.

Movie example of aliens is the show District 9 where the main character wikus contacted the virus and is beginning to mutate into an alien seek refuge in district 9 and and found Christopher and Wikus decides to help him because christopher promise to cure him if he help him. Canister was successfully stolen and people from the MNU has been pursueing them but later learnt that christopher need to go back to the mothership and come back 3 years later to help him. Feeling anxious and angry he decides to take off to the mother ship but were hit by a rocket laucher, in the end decides to help christopher board the mothership and kill off all MNU who is pursueing christopher from reaching the motherboard.

Movies example for time travel like Click where this guy has this super cool remote controller and is able to fast forward time, Butterfly Effect where the guy go back time to change his past unhappy events but wasn't happy so he went back again however everytime he changes events from the past he made it worse when he comes back to the future.

Anime too has time travel like the recent ones i've watch called The girl who leap through time, its about this girl who met this guy that comes from the future and there is only a limited no. of time he can leap through time and an accident occured when she hit a nut looking object and has the ability to leap through time as well so her last leap was to go back to the past inorder to help the guy she likes that comes from the future to leap back to his own world.

Here are the different kinds of conflicts that you can see in movies/books

Characters vs Self: this cases in the characters has to find out who he/she is and come to realise it themselves. one movie example where everyone might know is Resident Evil Alice Project where she is made with duplicate clones and every now and then the clone will wake up and escape, well not easily because they set traps in the laboratory and everytime the clone died she will be added to the trash full of 'alice' dead bodies. But something surprising was everytime the previous alice died the next one will know where are the traps are and are able to dodge it they didn't espect the clones to have a little of the real alice's memories.

Person vs person: This case is quite similar because its just about one human fighting the other, be it a protagonist vs antagonist or vampires Vs the werewolves

Person vs. Society: this is often from the main character's point of view as how he fights the society while the other party will feel that this is just like a person vs. person case. One movie example would be the show Matrix where we all know that the main character Neo fights against the Agents.

Person vs. Nature: this is something like a person fight against the nature like natural disaster. Movies like The Day After Tomorrow, The Day the Earth moved, Knowing, 2012, Tornado, Twister etc. These shows are quite scary and some people will just leave the cinema when the show just boardcast half way because it's really something that people will not wish to see maybe because they have been through it and didn't want to remember it. Even shows that are related to zoombies are also categorise in it like I am Legend, Qurantine, Daybreakers, Doomsday etc.

Person vs. Supernatural: Example of movies like ghost whisperer, six sense, ghostbuster, Supernatural etc. The word Supernatural comes from the latin word supra "above" and natura "nature". The supernatural meant that it is something unexplainable by natural law or phenomena.

Person vs. Machine/Technology: Movies that are closely related to humans and machines like the iRobot, Artificial Intelligents (AI), Terminator and Star Wars

FairyTale

Myths is something that relates the past to the present. Legends are stories told in realistic mode and contain rumors that made people believe it and most importantly the stories contains moral value. Fairy tales are usually passed down from generation to generation while there may be changes and also it is a way of expressing moral value.

One of a show i watched is the Myths Busters where they use their knowledge and technology to test out the myth that people come across and see if it really can happen. A few that i have memories of is that a pirate captain uses Cheese as canon ball and seriously it worked. The movie Wanted has a scene where they can make bullets curve when flying out and it has been tested as well and was busted. there are other interesting myth as well like making a boat out of newspaper and still be able to sit in it and go for a ride, what is interesting wasn't the things that the myths busters test out, what is interesting is when they made it happen.

Fairytale are bedtime story that we all know and well there's a movie called Bedtime Stories and it is quite interesting because the stories that they made up becomes real in reality. For other fairytale that we know of from disney are from other people's stories like the three little pigs, little mermaid from Hans Christian Andersen. From what we know is that three little pigs manage to escape from being eating but the truth is that the first two pigs were eaten and for little mermaid, she of cause didn't get to be with her prince charming as she turned into bubbles as she is unable to kill the prince with the dagger.

These stories arechanged because it's for children and it would be best if there are less violent essence in them and more happy endings. Everyone loves happy endings so for disney shows it always has happy endings. Well stories always has a moral and it only shows how we see the story, some people may not be able to catch the moral of the story for example the original version of three little pigs and the latest version the moral of the story is to do things as well as you can and build a strong foundation. well the one from disney did show this aspects but no as strong as the original story because we all know the three little pigs are brothers so they all know that building a strong foundation is important but they are just too lazy and end up being eating up by the big bad wolf but we can't possibly have kids learn about killing as this also serve as a bad influence on kids and that is why movies are rated as well like M18, M16 etc..

Fantasy

Movies that are Fantasy usually comes from either comic book or story books, It is said that we need to see inorder to create fantasy, and to coexist Imitation and Fantasy language is needed. One fine example is the movie Avatar. The world is so different from ours and the language that they speak is different. The only way to communicate with them is to be them. Someone invented and duplicate their appearance with the real persons face and implant the person's mind or soul into the avatar. Even if you went in the avatar there is no way you will know how to speak their language, the only reason why you were in the avatar is to get closer to the tribe so that you can know them better and also get to know the things they are here for, the minerals.

Fantasy is all about magic and does magic exist in this world? People that pray makes magic, how about those times when hitting paper doll was popular? Is it a black magic or was it just a fraud? It is said that hitting and scolding a paper doll will put a curse on that person but what actually true is that it's just a toy for you to vent your anger on. Heard of black magic when we went to thailand, didn't know how it works. well one of the magic that people love is magic show, it creates illusion and it all actually adds up to be tricks. One of the show that i like to watch on the TV is the channal U Magic Show where the participant in taiwan is suppose to perform a magic show and be judge to sit on the top magicians crown but all those that i saw wasn't as interesting as a Taiwan Magician Lu Chen, and also our most well known magician David copperfield. I was once into magic and it realy is fun and mysterious.

In reality when we speak of magic the thing that is actually happening is skills, if a magician isn't skilled enough then he would show case his tricks to people and it will not look mysterious anymore. While in game when magic is spoke of it will meant that the player needs Mana/Qi and this Mana/Qi gives them ability to use magic like some sort of energy.

Heroes

Heroes are fake, practically if you ask me hero exist because of us as we made stories for them well i should say heroes express a deep psychological aspects of human beings. Some times when we are in trouble we would be wondering if it can be solve easier if we have super powers or when we are super man. Stories made heroes interesting, who love a character that has no stories? Heroes be it in stories or movies gives us space for imagination. Kids watch Power Ranger and eventually when the markets sell toys like cool power ranger gadgets the kids would believe that they can be power ranger if they buy it and as they grow older they found out that it's all fake haha, well even for me as i used to watch sailor moon with my sister and get the pen that transform her and found out it's fake haha.. well i guess toys helps kids to have imagination and be creative in all ways.

Kids will definately hate the bad guys because they love the good guys so much they could just throw a thing at the TV when the bad guys appears well if you thought that kids does that and it's childish well if you ever watch those taiwan drama even as an adult you would probably do the same thing haha.. Seriously but without the bad guys how do you made the good guy looks good? Sometimes a bad guy can also have the same mind set of the good guys but the only difference is that the good guys are doing what people thinks is right and gets supported instantly. I guess it's a good thing that heroes ain't real because it would be a disaster if Japan's Gozilla, Ultra man, power ranger and US hulk, Superman, Spiderman etc. all comes to action super chaotic even worse than having war. Heroes powers are what people imagine they had, for me i use to like powers like time control, healing and mental Control haha there are other as well. Now that i think about it Mind control may not be impossible since people can play chess mentally.

There's a few abilities that the show Heroes is boardcasting:

Claire Bennet has the power of regenaration and nothing can kill her and to even test out her abilities she even record herself suiciding with different ways and still manage to stand up not to mention when her bones broke out and she push it in and it regenerates and also cutting off her pinky toe and well it regenerates. It is cool and yet disgusting. The only thing that stopped her from regenerating is when something got stuck in her head/back of the neck but once the thing got removed she starts regenerating again. She just gains immotality and i think everyone wants immotality.

Peter Petrelli has the power of Absobtion when he is near any other heroes he gains their ability as well

Hiro Nakamura has the ability to teleport and discover the killer that killed his dad but it kills his brain cells when he used it too much.

Isaac Mendez has the ability to draw the future he did foresee that he is going to die but he just couldn't do anything. Maybe people will think that seeing the future is cool and that they could change the future but it would be hard to see yourself dying and still able to stand up against it.

One of the interesting characters that people can greatly relate to is Sylar a serial killer in show, he was told that he has special powers since young and he greatly believes in it until oneday his master found out that he has none and felt extremely angry and soon he found out that he actually did had the ability to fix clocks even those super old type so decides to hunt down the other heroes and steal their powers. He kill them and took a part of the brain tissue that consists that powers and inject into his own own.

From True Blood
Sookie Stackhouse has the ability to hear people thoughts and it's giving her a hard time even though she can control whether she wants to listen or not but well she's in love with a vampire because she can't hear his thoughts. Everyone hate vampires and didn't approve her to be with him even though he is nice, in this show it show us that vampires are not afraid of crosses










Archetypes
Thinking of which heroes archetypes i am somehow i just didn't quite fit in so i thought of doing a archetypes quiz to see which one i am and this is the result.

Warrior

The Warrior defeats the villain and rescues the victim. Warriors are courageous and disciplined, imposing high standards on themselves. At worst, they run roughshod over others. At best, they assert themselves appropriately to make the world a better place.

well after looking at the results i did think life as competitive but not to the extend that i want to gain power from it haha.. never thought i would be a super hero that defeats villians i guess the only villian i ever defeated is my laziness haha and i tend to discipline myself to do work or else nothing will come out. I think that i have a little of Orphan that is realistic and practical, i am not practical in a way that if doing something doesn't benefits me i won't even do it.

Before i was a Warrior and Orphan i use to be Innocent, well i think everyone starts out as innocent and the only problem is that whether you changes or not. Being a warrior wasn't so bad as i thought since the world is quite competitive and if it gives me motivation to do better.

Understanding Creative Process

For now here's the different type of creative techniques we try in class:

1. Idea Box – it a morphological analysis method that helps the structuring and investigating the relationships contained in problems. Eg. List a variations of parameter and combined different variations of parameters to create new ideas

Step 1- List major elements involed in the issue or problem eg. Shapes, material, animals etc.
Step 2 - Each Variable is listed under different element eg. Shapes we have triangle, circle, square, oval etc.
Step 3 - Combining variables together to come up with ideas
Step 4 – Analyse ideas and choose one to expand the idea

2. Deep Doodling – To generate ideas, brainstorm with individual doing deep doodling in a group and exchange ideas and opinions as well as connections between ideas

3. Keep track of good ideas by writing it down and keep it somewhere so when we ran out of ideas and relook at the ideas we originally has, we might be able to come up with something.

4. Scamper and Word Chain that helps us think out of the box to create something and combined them together

5. Creative Cards that helps us along the way when we are doing group brainstorming

6. Questions that helps us proceed when we are stuck at some point

7. Wearing different thinking hats

HTI2 Game and My Hero Journey

I feel that HTI 2 game is like a room full of portals. These portals meant different emotions and also different aspects/things we can learn from. The white background meant Ideas where ideas is flowing in the air where one can't see with naked eye. It also meant the inifinite ideas one can think of. Players have to take a step infront to enter the portals of wonders.



This is my hero journey where i have entered the belly of confusion monster. This is infact the most dangerous map because i might have lost to the monster and be lost forever. The biggest enemy of confusion is oneself therefore i have to had the courage and will to go through the maze and walk out of confusion.

Self Intro

My name is Claudia from Singapore polytechnic, Been studying ITE for 4 years and it is really not easy coming to SP to study Games Design, well i have to go through interview and showcase my portfolio in order to get in so i find myself super lucky. I hate last min homework because it gives me alot of stress and i can't think when it's so last min.

Love animals because they are so cute and adorable. I can do alot of things like doing cross stitch, sewing, knitting and build models. I love handicraft because i am good at it. I love crime scenes, medical and comedy shows. I hate horror movies because it makes me go crazy when i heard sounds at night and will tend to have nightmare after. Though i hate horror shows, i still see some though haha. I don't have alot of good friends because i am quite anti-social but once people get to know me they will know i am not so bad after all =D. I love action games like CS, Rakion, S4 League, final fantasy and escape game. That's all about me
